Stories from the Trees

Come join us in the forest of wisdom. Seed a story in your heart and let it grow.

Luton's very own multi-award winning Khayaal Theatre presents a rich collection of stories from Ireland, India and beyond. Drawn from different cultures and faith traditions, the stories celebrate our shared connection with nature and humanity.

Guardians Among the Trees
Adapted from an old Irish ballad, this mystical tale tells of a beautiful maiden Athracta, who escapes from a castle on the eve of her unwanted wedding and takes refuge in a forest. But when a king threatens the destruction of the forest to make weapons of war, Athracta must summon all her feminine power and the majestic antlered creatures of the forest to bring about peace. (Irish/Catholic/Christian)

The Crow and the Banyan Tree
A crow has lost a kernel of corn under the roots of the banyan tree and now the farmer’s wife is after him. Crow sets out to cut down the tree and finds a lot of trouble. This rollicking repetitive tale from the Punjab invites everyone to join in, tell the tale and save the tree. (Punjab/India/Sikh)

Magic Pear Tree
A quirky tale from China where a Taoist priest in the marketplace plants a pear pip of wonder in the imagination to teach a merchant about the perils of greed. (China/Taoism)

The Future Trees fruit of Now
An old gardener reaps fruit from a tree on the very day he plants it when a young Sultan passes by. (Iran/Persia/Muslim)
